Drug firms required to increase parallel imports

IP News from duytho.comDomestic pharmaceutical firms should increase parallel imports of high-priced proprietary medicines, the Ministry of Health has recently requested.

“Parallel importing” allows Vietnamese importers to purchase drugs subject to Intellectual Property rights directly from a licensed or authorized overseas sources rather than the original manufacturers, taking advantage of the fact that pharmaceutical companies sometimes charge significantly lower prices in one country than in another.

Parallel importing is seen as a method to stabilize soaring drug prices in Vietnam, according to the Health Ministry.

The ministry also demanded that local enterprises only sell standard-quality medicine in accordance with its regulations.
