Most fish sauce not the real Phu Quoc

IP News from duytho.comAbout 180-200mil litres of fish sauce are consumed every year, however, only 5-8 of that volume is authentic Phu Quoc fish sauce.

Consumers have been angered to hear from the Phu Quoc Fish Sauce Producers’ Association that only 5-8 of fish sauce sold each year comes from Phu Quoc.

Dang Hong Phat, the owner of the Hung Thanh 1 Fish Sauce Establishment on Phu Quoc Island said that only Phu Quoc producers have the know-how to make delicious fish sauce.

Phu Quoc fish sauce must be made from anchovies caught around Phu Quoc. These anchovies then must be salted with the salt from Ba Ria – Vung Tau. The most important thing is that the fish sauce must be made on Phu Quoc Island. Fish sauce made on the mainland is simply not the same quality as that made on Phu Quoc Island.

That explains why authentic Phu Quoc fish sauce has been favoured by consumers. Phu Quoc fish sauce always sells out of stock quickly.

Many traders have been fraudulently labelling their products as ‘Phu Quoc Fish Sauce’ to boost sales. Forged Phu Quoc fish sauce can be seen everywhere, and Thai and Hong Kong traders are sell the moody sauce. Many enterprises in Kien Giang province even go so far as to say they are the real Phu Quoc fish sauce producers.

The protection of Phu Quoc fish sauce trademark has been discussed for the last five years. However, the measures to fight against the trade frauds proved to be not strong enough to improve the situation.

In principle, the real Phu Quoc fish sauce must be produced and bottled on Phu Quoc island. Only the fish sauce establishments on Phu Quoc island can use the ‘Phu Quoc fish sauce’ trademark for their products. The requirement was also clearly stated in the temporary regulations on supervising and certifying the original Phu Quoc fish sauce enacted by the Ministry of Fisheries.

However, in the transitional three year period, the ministry allowed fish sauce produced on Phu Quoc and bottled in HCM City to be labelled as ‘Phu Quoc fish sauce’.

The Ministry of Trade is completing necessary procedures to register the name ‘Phu Quoc fish sauce’ in the European market.
