Kim Ke rice became the first Variety of Vietnamese rice to receive a brand name registration certificate from the National Office of Intellectual Property (NOIP).
HCM City-based Minh Cat Production, Trade and Service Co Ltd will be entitled to use the legally protected brand name of Kim Ke nationwide for a term of ten years, according to the office.
The Tam Xoan Hai Hau Rice Association has submitted to the office applications for registration of origin and protection for the Tam Xoan Hai Hau variety of rice, the office said. The rice is grown in the Hai Hau District of Nam Dinh.
Dao The Anh, chief of the agricultural systems department of the Vietnam Agricultural Science Institute, said the institute is undertaking a project to build and protect the brand name of Tam Xoan Hai Hau rice in the world market.
Vietnamese rice has been exported mainly to Asian, Middle East and African countries, but Vietnamese rice is not always popular on the world market because it lacks brand name recognition.
Vietnam expects to export 3.8-4mil tonnes of rice this year, similar to last year’s 3.9mil tonnes, earning the country US$1bil.
The country has a targeted food production of approximately 36mil tonnes in 2005, the Ministry of Trade said.
